World’s Biggest Collection of Australian Pink Diamond on Display

A huge collection of over 100 Australian pink diamond, many from the iconic Argyle mine, collected over three decades by New York based LJ West Diamonds, is now on display at Melbourne Museum, Australia.

It’s described by organizers as “the largest collection of Australian pink diamonds to be shown in the world”.

Among the gems on display is the 2.83 carat Argyle Violet, the only stone in history to carry a violet color grading (produced by the presence of hydrogen) and hundreds of times rarer than a pink.

“Our planet created these flawless diamonds over 1.6 billion years ago,” said Museums Victoria Research Institute’s head of sciences Dermot Henry.

“Finding a pink diamond is like retrieving the needle from the haystack. Only one carat in every million will display this intense pink colour. They remind us how truly wonderful nature is.”

Many of the Argyle pinks diamonds have never been on public display.

Pink Diamonds is showing at Melbourne Museum until January 29, 2023, and is free with museum entry.
